Brief back-ground
Korogocho festival is an annual community cultural event that started in 2010, traditionally held in the month of April but later changed to August. Different groups of artists came together to celebrate different talents and their diversity in Korogocho. The festival is spearheaded by Hope Raisers Initiative in partnership with various community artists and stakeholders.
This event seeks to engage key community stakeholders and decision makers on a platform that encourages active participating of young people in a dialogue to understand the importance of arts, sports and other forms of cultural expression in the community development and empowerment.

Part of this festival was the Women in Public Space forum which was a celebration of women inspiring positive change in public spaces in Nairobi.
KUWA’s director was invited to present at the forum in August 2016 which stimulated conversations with regard to planning for and designing inclusive public spaces, involvement of women play in democratic practices promoting social development as well as experiences and lessons learned from working with and within public space.
Other agencies which were part of this discussion included the GoDown Arts Centre, East African Institute, Kounkuey Design Initiative and the UN HABITAT.
As part of the festival, KUWA also participated in the improvement of a playground in Ngunyumu Primary School in Korogocho in partnership with Play Without Borders, Slum Architects Association and Hope raisers.
The playground project was initiated in 2015 and was made using local materials from the area like tires and pallets.
Children were engaged in improving and creating new structures through brainstorming ideas as well as participating in the construction process making the whole process design inclusive.
KUWA helped in revamping the space and making it vibrant by painting it using inviting orange and blue colours.
