Kukua is an international enterprise that engages professionals from various disciplines in building mobile games which make learning fun by taking their players on an exploratory journey inspired by local culture, myth and folklore. This is done with an aim to combat illiteracy amongst children who have little to no access to quality education.Kukua has developed 2 games, Sema and Simi each tailored to fit into the Kenyan and Syrian context respectively.Their games are designed around their end users and each of their prototypes constantly field-tested to optimize game dynamics and educational and engagement outcomes.

Kukua was selected amongst 79 initial bidders for the EduApp4Syria Competition and received considerable funding for successfully reaching Phase 2. EduApp4Syria is an innovative competition promoted by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) that is seeking a smartphone application than can build fundamental literacy skills in Arabic and improve psychosocial well-being for Syrian refugee children, aged 5-10 and is now competing for the Global Learning XPRIZE which challenges teams from around the world to develop open source and scalable software that will enable children in developing countries to teach themselves basic reading, writing and arithmetic within 18 months.

KUWA is the field testing team working with KUKUA towards tailoring the game for the children on the ground.KUWA engages children in low income areas to test the SEMA app with it’s end users. All results feed into the development of the game based on the reactions and testing with the children.
KUWA is also using EGMA/EGRA to develop the game further.
